Pterygium

Pterygium

Pterygium (from Greek pterygion=”little wing”) is a fleshy mass of conjunctival tissue that grows onto the cornea. The cause seems to be UV light damage to the limbal stem cells, that normally stop the conjuntival tissue from crossing the limbal border. That is why Pterygium is more often seen in the region of the Equator. That Lesion is not dangerous, but can cause foreign body sensation und blurred vision due to induction of Astigmatism.
